Why we do what we do

To Help You Understand

Possibly the service in which you are about to participate will be different than others you have attended. You are among people that believe as Jesus said, “they that worship God must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” We believe that our worship is scripturally worship motivated and directed by the Holy Spirit.

Why do we worship God?

We are admonished throughout the scriptures to worship Him.

“Then Jesus said to him, "Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'"” Matthew 4:10

Why do we stand to sing?

“The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise God, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice.” 2 Chronicles 20:19

“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.” Revelation 7:9

Why do we clap our hands?

“Oh clap your hands, all you nations. Shout to God with the voice of triumph!” Psalm 47:1

Why do we lift our hands?

“So I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name.” Psalm 63:4

“Lift up your hands in the sanctuary. Praise God!” Psalm 134:2

“I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.” 1 Timothy 2:8

Why do we have audible praise unto God?

“Praise God, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name!” Psalm 103:1

“After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Hallelujah! Salvation, power, and glory belong to our God. … I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!” Revelation 19:1, 6

Why do we have this type of worship?

“Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him. He who doesn't love me doesn't keep my words. The word which you hear isn't mine, but the Father's who sent me.” John 4:23-24

“For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” Philippians 3:3

Why do we sing choruses as well as hymns?

“Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and singing praises in your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:18-19

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16

Why do we prophesy?

“Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. … But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.” 1 Corinthians 14:1, 3

“But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. … and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages.” 1 Corinthians 12:7, 10

Why do we have speaking with tongues and interpretations of those tongues in the church?

“Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking with other languages.” 1 Corinthians 14:39

See 1 Corinthians 12:7, 10

“Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.” 1 Corinthians 14:5

“If any man speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.” 1 Corinthians 14:27

Why are musical instruments a part of the worship service?

“Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet! Praise him with harp and lyre! Praise him with tambourine and dancing! Praise him with stringed instruments and flute! Praise him with loud cymbals! Praise him with resounding cymbals!” Psalm 150:3-5

“I heard a sound from heaven, like the sound of many waters, and like the sound of a great thunder. The sound which I heard was like that of harpists playing on their harps.” Revelation 14:2
